New perspectives for Emscher and Lippe

The rivers in our region have changed their faces several times. Originally unregulated waterways in pastoral landscapes, they then became open wastewater conduits in a heavily populated industrial landscape. Now they are going to become attractive waterways in a conurbation that is actively advancing structural change towards the services and technology sectors.

Safe – clean – profitable

Humanity and nature make competing demands on the area around Emscher and Lippe. Our task is to balance these demands in a sustainable way. Living and working must be made possible here, as must the revival of living, species-rich river landscapes – not an easy task in a region that without our work would often be under water. In Europe’s biggest conurbation between Dortmund and Duisburg and the Lippe region joining it to the north, we provide modern, cost-efficient water management involving a wide range of tasks, including

  • wastewater treatment
  • care and maintenance of bodies of water
  • re-naturalisation of open wastewater conduits
  • flood protection
  • regulation of water flows, and
  • groundwater and rainwater management.

Stronger together – the “EG/LV”, a model for success

From a legal point of view, EMSCHERGENOSSENSCHAFT (EG) and LIPPEVERBAND (LV) are two public corporations with a similar legal mandate. We have however been fusing our expertise for more than 85 years now and so are Germany’s biggest wastewater disposal and sewage treatment plant operator. The advantages of our partnership are obvious: significant synergy effects from knowledge sharing and transfer, more experience and greater profitability. That is why we are able to carry out our tasks very cost-effectively. We are united by our shared goal of finding ecological and technical solutions that will create an attractive landscape around Emscher and Lippe – within the region and for the region.

Our mission

We have been active in our region for over 100 years. Based on this experience, we provide services tailored to the specific needs of people here and to the further development of economic activities on Emscher and Lippe.

Cooperative ventures and projects

Whether it’s climate change, the revolving energy market or water pollution – we are working at regional and European levels to find new and sustainable wastewater treatment concepts, energy generation methods and ways of dealing with our changing climate.
