Flood protection measure

How likely is being affected by flooding? Is it possible to predict when it will occur and how severe it will be?

To answer these questions, since October 2007 we have been developing a flood risk information system for the Emscher-Lippe region, which makes flood-related information continuously available. It is based on rainfall and water level data from our own measurements, which is supplemented by radar data and the precipitation forecasts of the German Meteorological Service. These are integrated into the hydrological models of the Emscher and the Lippe. This allows us to quickly and reliably estimate the precipitation and flood risk situation, and to determine what measures should be implemented as a result.

These immediate measures are tailored to the individual situation, and supplement the fundamental precautionary organisational and technical flood protection measures: flood retention basins, dykes, pumping stations and flood action plans.
